I had the honor to compose music for and with Koshi’s brandnew Earth Symphony collection — OCEAN, FOREST, RIVER and MOUNTAIN —  four individual neoclassical pieces, each inspired by the essence behind its name. The 4 Koshis—crafted from different types of wood and featuring 12 built-in tone bars—sound fantastic and, with their 440 Hz tuning, are compatible with instruments in “conventional tuning.”  A few months before the official launch of the new KOSHI series I received prototypes of each Koshi from the company, which I used to compose these four neoclassical pieces… 

As Koshi´s sound already is deeply connected to sound healing, meditation, yoga and many other forms of conscious listening, I wanted to open another door… to explore what happens when this familiar sound enters a larger musical landscape of piano, cello and additional acoustic textures in a neoclassical context.

A Koshi cannot be controlled in the same way as a piano or cello 

…and I didn't want it to be. Its movement and slight unpredictability are part of its beauty. So instead of forcing the chimes into the compositions, I tried to compose around their character — creating places in the music where they could simply emerge… and interact with the instruments.

This project was co-created with the wonderful Sascha Kid on cello throughout the whole project

and Joseph Pepe Danza brings the breath and ancient voice of the Shakuhachi and Bansuri into FOREST.

I hope EARTH SYMPHONY allows you to hear Koshi in a way you may not have experienced before. 
Not as something different.
Simply within a different space.
